JEWELRY in Jane Austen Novels

November 2 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Jane Austen used jewelry in her novels to illuminate her characters’ desires and motives.  From “Unbearably Fine” and “Playing with Her Bracelets,” we will discuss examples of conspicuous consumption as well as true values defining the characters. In “The Antique Ring Boutique,” we learn about Jane’s personal jewelry: the turquoise ring, her topaz cross, and other pieces she received as gifts.

Please be prepared to tell us the story of a piece of your personal jewelry that you particularly prize!

Below are the 3 articles that will be used during our discussion.
